This is the new 4th edition, published last year, so it's not the same as the old non-digital 4th edition.

You need to get this book as soon as possible, so that you already have it for the first lesson. Try to get it directly in a bookshop like Feltrinelli International near Piazza della Repubblica if you are in Rome. If you order it, it may take a long time to arrive. Don’t get a photocopy of it. You need the real book because it gives you a personal access code to the e-version of the book and all the online, backup material which you can download onto an App on your computer.

Make sure you you get the version with answers (with key). Use the ISBN number above. When you come to the lesson bring the book. If you follow the lesson on the computer, open the paper book or the ebook on the App. Each lesson I will give you work to do for the next lesson which I will post on my second year Google Classroom and on my blog. Try to form small study groups with other students from the course, so that you can work together on social media like you did last year.

We will use the material in the book for our lessons and you can do more work online as self-study to consolidate what you are learning.

Programma e note generali

I corsi di lettorato in lingua inglese del corso di laurea triennale in Lingue, Culture, Letterature, e

Traduzione prevedono un percorso di approfondimento delle competenze linguistiche articolato in

tre anni che inizia con un livello di competenza B1 nel primo anno e si conclude con un livello B2+/C1 nel terzo anno. Non sono previsti corsi e programmi per principianti (il livello B1 previsto in ingresso dovrebbe corrispondere almeno al livello di competenza di uscita dal ciclo di scuola secondaria superiore). In questo senso, il corso di lettorato di primo anno va inteso come corso di consolidamento e perfezionamento in vista del lavoro previsto negli anni successivi (fino al ciclo di laurea magistrale).

Ai fini del raggiungimento degli obbiettivi formativi ogni studente dovrà mettere in conto di dedicare allo studio della lingua due ore aggiuntive per ogni ora di corso (dunque 4 ore settimanali di lezione più 8 ore settimanali di self-study diviso tra attività varie, comprese la lettura di giornali, riviste, e libri e la visione di film in lingua originale). L’impegno medio necessario per un buon esito d’esame di primo anno è quindi di circa 180 ore distribuite tra ottobre e maggio/giugno.

Per ottenere i 12 crediti dell’esame di lingua di primo anno uno studente dovrà superare la prova di

lettorato e l’esame sul modulo con il docente della cattedra di Lingua inglese I. Il voto finale viene

stabilito e verbalizzato dal docente sulla base dei risultati della prova di lettorato ed esame sul modulo.

La prova di lettorato è scritta e/o orale e l’esito è espresso con i seguenti giudizi: insufficiente,

sufficiente, discreto, buono, ottimo, eccellente.

Idee per l’auto-apprendimento

Film in streaming e siti per lo studio dell’inglese. Chiedete a un lettore, o trovate le vostre strategie,

per migliorare la comprensione del parlato, e anche la pronuncia, attraverso film e filmati.

Sperimentate togliendo e mettendo i sottotitoli, ecc. Trovate canali da seguire, o seguite una serie, o

Verifica

La verifica finale consisterà in un test scritto e/o orale. Il formato della verifica potrà cambiare da una sessione d’esame all’altra in funzione della necessità/possibilità di fare esami in presenza o in remoto, a seconda dell’andamento dell’emergenza sanitaria in corso. Gli studenti riceveranno informazioni sulla tipologia di verifica prevista con congruo anticipo.

La verifica includerà una, o una combinazione, delle seguenti parti: 1) English in Use, 2) Reading

Comprehension and Vocabulary, 3) Writing, 4) Speaking (Oral). English in Use può comportare

domande di grammatica e uso della lingua, e/o un cloze test (un test con parole da inserire). La sezione di writing comprenderà l’elaborazione di un testo scritto di 180-200 parole. Per la verifica orale, si utilizzerà il ‘set book’ come base per la discussione, ma la verifica di livello includerà anche argomenti di tipo generale.

Per le matricole di quest’anno (2021-2022), la prima data disponibile per sostenere la verifica sarà a giugno 2022.

Il set book è To Kill A Mockingbird di Harper Lee, valido per l’anno accademico corrente se non diversamente specificato. Gli studenti dovranno prendere appunti sul vocabolario presente nel libro, e portare gli appunti alla verifica orale.

Programme

The goal of the second-year course is to bring students to a B2 level in the four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking, and to practise upper-intermediate grammar and vocabulary. At the end of the course, there will be an exam  based on the course material covered in class (see below). Students are also required to read a set book of modern fiction in English, to be used as the basis for part of the exam. Students are strongly encouraged to attend lessons where possible, and are also expected to do a considerable amount of self-study outside class hours. 

 

Final Exam

The final exam will consist of a written and/or oral test. The format may change from one exam session to another, and may be online or in presenza, depending on the current situation. Students will be advised well in advance what format to expect.

The exam will include one or any combination of the following: 1) English in Use, 2) Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary, 3) a question about the set book, 4) Writing, 5) Oral Exam.

ENGLISH IN USE may include any or all of the following: sentence transformations, a cloze test (a text with missing words to be filled in) or translation of single sentences. For the READING, students will be required to read a text taken from an authentic source and answer questions about content, vocabulary and discourse. For the SET BOOK, students will be given a page taken at random from the book and will be asked to comment on the characters and what is happening in the scene, as well as to contextualise the extract in relation to events happening before and after the scene in question. For the WRITING, students will be required to write a composition of 180-200 words from a choice of three topics (one from each of the following types: narrative, opinion, advantages/disadvantages). For the ORAL EXAM, students may be asked about any aspect of their course, including the set book, and will also be required to engage in general conversation.

The first available date for the exam is June 2022.

English File DIGITAL GOLD B2 Student’s Book with key, 4th Edition, Clive Oxenden & Christina Latham-Koenig, OUP, 2020.  It is important to actually buy the book (not make a copy of it), as it includes an access code to online material which will provide most of the work to do for the course. You will need to already have this book at the first lesson of the semester.
