Important
message to all students
For the opinion essay, you need the layout, organisation and style explained on page 118, with paragraphs structured according to the points you make. You also need to use good linking words (page 118).
For all the essays given in the homework, you need the layout, organisation and style explained on the appropriate pages in the Writing section of English File. For example, for the narrative essay and 'for' and 'against' essays, check the model and analysis on pages 114 and 115 respectively). Do the exercises slowly and think about why the exercise is there.
Absorb the rationale for each kind of essay BEFORE you write yours. So consider things like:
the layout
using paragraphs according to the points you make
structuring them clearly to express your point, topic sentence and development
using linking words
formal or informal style and the kind of language
set phrases
This is what they want at the exam, so your writing has to be up to standard.
So one more time ...!
When you write an essay, first check the page in the Writing section which gives you the model. Make sure you understand the model and the task BEFORE you start writing. The homework section will tell you if I am asking you for something different or giving you different instructions or offering you alternative titles (e.g. page 118 Expressing an Opinion). Then make sure you switch on your grammar and spell check on your computer and use a good dictionary to find the right words to convey your meaning.
